Most House Fires Start in Kitchen

dusco-primary[1]Half of all house fires in the United States start in the kitchen. Of those, 90% of them are related to the stove, at least according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA). There’s actually a very simple and cost-effective device that specifically prevents stovetop fires from spreading, but because of poor advertising, just instead very widely used.

The device is aptly called the Stovetop FireStop. The device is placed above the stove with a fuse that can be lit by a flame reaching too high. Once the wick is lit by a flame reaching higher than necessary during cooking, the device opens to unleash a fire suppressant powder onto the stovetop effectively putting out a blaze. The can that holds the powder also falls onto the top of the stove.

The only downside to the product is that the fall and the fire suppressant material may ruin any materials in the drop zone. However, fire officials say that it’s a small price to pay for a product that is guaranteed to save your kitchen and your home.

The Stovetop FireStop costs about $25 in local retail stores, though Resource Residential, the Texas-based company that supplies the product has been slow to distribute nationally. Fire safety professionals say that for $25, these should really be in everyone’s home. What’s $25 for peace of mind?
